The Great Wildebeest Migration
Month-by-Month Calendar
The Great Migration never stops. It is a 365-day continuous circular journey between Kenya and Tanzania. Here is where to be and when.
Southern Serengeti & Ndutu Plains (Tanzania)
Over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a 3-week window on the nutrient-rich volcanic plains of Ndutu. This incredible concentration of vulnerable young attracts massive numbers of lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas, creating non-stop wildlife drama.
Central Serengeti & Moru Kopjes
As the rains conclude, the herds begin moving north through the central Seronera valley and western corridor. The air is crystal clear, dust is absent, landscapes are vibrant emerald green, and luxury camps offer exceptional value with fewer safari vehicles.
Grumeti River & Western Serengeti
The herds gather along the banks of the Grumeti River. Here they face their first major water barrier, braving gigantic Nile crocodiles waiting in the deep pools. Tree-climbing lions and dense riverine forests create unforgettable scenes.
Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya) & Northern Serengeti
The undisputed climax of the Great Migration! Over 1.5 million animals plunge across the turbulent Mara River between Tanzania and Kenya. Dust billows, predator ambushes occur along the banks, and the open Mara savannah fills with endless wildlife.
Lobo Area to Southern Serengeti
Prompted by the short rains, the herds begin their southern trek through the eastern Serengeti and Lobo region, heading back to the short-grass plains of Ndutu to begin the cycle anew.
