Day-by-Day Itinerary
Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)
Transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate. Register with park rangers and begin your trek through the lush afro-montane tropical rainforest to Machame Camp.
Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)
Ascend past the rainforest canopy into the giant heather and moorland zone, crossing rocky ridges to the Shira Plateau with breathtaking sunset views of Kibo peak.
Shira Camp (3,840m) via Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco (3,950m)
Essential acclimatization day: climb high to volcanic Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep low at Barranco Camp beneath the giant Senecio trees.
Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall using hands and feet (non-technical). Traverse ridges into the alpine Karanga Valley for an extra day of acclimatization.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Base Camp (4,640m)
Trek through the desolate alpine desert to Barafu Camp. Settle in, eat an early dinner, and rest before the midnight summit push.
Summit Push: Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) down to Mweka (3,100m)
Begin trekking at midnight by headlamp across frozen scree. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise and push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) β the Roof of Africa! Descend to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) & Moshi
Descent through the warm rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your official gold summit certificates and transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned celebration.
